Joint Strikes Target Iran-Backed Militias
The United States and Saudi Arabia have launched joint military strikes targeting Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq. The operations, confirmed by US Central Command (CENTCOM) and Riyadh, came in response to recent attacks attributed to these proxy forces against American military installations and Saudi energy infrastructure.
The strikes mark a significant escalation in regional tensions, which saw Iran conduct multiple missile and drone attacks. According to CENTCOM, these Iran-backed groups were responsible for more than two dozen drone attacks in recent days. While details on casualties vary, Al-Monitor reported that at least ten Iran-backed militia fighters were killed in the US-Saudi strikes.
Iranian Attacks on US Forces and Shipping
Prior to the joint strikes, Iran launched a barrage of missiles targeting US forces in the Middle East. Notably, Iran carried out a surprise ballistic missile attack on US forces in the Middle East, with CENTCOM reporting that all missiles were successfully intercepted. This included an attack on US troops stationed in Jordan, which the US military stated it successfully thwarted.
Beyond military targets, Iran also reportedly struck three tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping lane. Iran has also rejected a proposal from Oman regarding the management of the waterway, emphasizing its intent to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz.
