German CDU taps Thorsten Frei as parliamentary group chief after surrogacy scandal

The decision follows a weekend surrogacy controversy that forced Spahn’s resignation and ends a weeks‑long leadership dispute between the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU.
